Tattooing itself is from a puncture wound, made in the skin & then inked. Tattoos are created by a needle into the skin & then put ink to the region. What makes tattoos a durable, is not because the ink is inserted into the epidermis (top layer of skin, often flaking & produced longer lifetime). Rather, the tattoos are made with ink that is inserted into the layers of the dermis (second layer of skin), cells in the dermis tends to be fixed, thus making a permanent tattoo.
